What job roles require a DBS check?

Job roles requiring a Basic Criminal Disclosure

There are different levels of DBS checks and certain job roles require higher levels of checks than others. For example, jobs such as doctors and teachers require an enhanced DBS check. These types of checks can’t be applied for directly by the individual and they have strict eligibility criteria that must be met before the individual can be checked.

What happens if you want your employee checked but they’re not eligible for a standard or enhanced DBS check?

If the candidates / employee’s job role doesn’t involve working with unsupervised children or vulnerable adults but you would like them checked to make an informed decision, with the individual’s permission, you can process a basic criminal record check. This type of check isn’t job role specific and will give you five years unspent criminal convictions.
Basic criminal checks are often used for jobs roles such as delivery drivers, charity workers, shop work any job role where the employer may require the check as part of their employer’s processes, but the job role isn’t eligible for any higher level of screening.

How would an individual complete a basic criminal check?

As an individual, if you would like to complete a basic criminal check for your own personal use, you can do so online via our website. This would be classed as a personal criminal check and will give you five years unspent criminal convictions.
An individual may require a basic criminal check for a job role where there is no access to unsupervised children or vulnerable adults, but a basic check is required by the employer.

What is the cost for a basic or personal check?

The cost of a basic disclosure is £40.60.

What is the expiry date of a basic level check?

There is no expiry date on a basic level check or any level DBS check, there is only an issue date. It is down to the individual organisation and their policies as to how often they require a new certificate.

How will the changes to how basic checks are processed affect my application?

From January 1st 2018, basic disclosures are no longer provided by Disclosure Scotland and have been taken over by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

This means if your job role is based in England or Wales or you live in England or Wales you should apply to Disclosure and Barring Service. If you live in Scotland or the job role is based in Scotland you should apply to Disclosure Scotland. If your check is processed through Disclosure and Barring Service, you will be able to use the web service solution. To date 80% of basic applications are being completed within less than 24 hours.
