What are Basic DBS Checks?
A Basic DBS Check provides details of all non-spent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA). Applicants can access their completed basic disclosure certificates online, track the progress of their checks, and raise any necessary queries through a user-friendly platform.
Basic disclosure checks are processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for England and Wales. For roles based in Scotland, applications should be directed to Disclosure Scotland.
When do I need a Basic DBS check?
Basic disclosures are accessible to all employers and individuals and cover a wide range of roles and responsibilities. They are not tied to specific jobs, making them suitable for anyone requiring this level of disclosure. All checks must be conducted fairly and with individual consent.
These checks help employers assess potential risks to their business from the outset, ensuring employees are placed in appropriate roles. However, for positions involving sensitive responsibilities or working with vulnerable groups, such as children or adults, an enhanced or standard disclosure will likely be required.

Basic level disclosure – this is a non-specific check that is available to anyone who requires certification. Basically, it is available to anyone for any purpose. It is commonly used for personal licence holders, couriers or similar.Disclosure Scotland produce this level of Disclosure, as well as the DBS from June 2017.
