Leisure Centres: Do You Need to Screen New Staff?

If you’re in charge of HR and hiring new staff at a local leisure centre, there’s something you should know. All potential staff members need to go through employment screening. However, not all will need to receive an in-depth Enhanced DBS Check.

Here we’ll take a look at the different jobs available at a leisure centre and the level of check each of these roles will require.

Jobs That Require a Basic Disclosure Check

• Receptionists
• Canteen workers
• Office admin positions
• Cleaners
• Maintenance employees

Anyone applying to work in a leisure centre should be screened by the DBS, but those who will be working in an area with limited activity with children or vulnerable adults will require only the most basic of checks.

So, for example, a receptionist who simply hands over a ticket or books a class for a child will need basic background screening.

Jobs That Require a Standard DBS Check

• Sports club supervisors (if working as part of a team)
• Gym or fitness instructors
• Events staff

For those who will be working more closely with children or vulnerable adults, further checks are required.

Staff who work in the gym or supervising a sports club, will spend time with these vulnerable groups, but it is unlikely they will carry out any activities alone in a one-on-one situation. As a result, a Standard DBS Check should suffice.

Jobs That Require an Enhanced DBS Check

• Sports club leaders
• Kid’s club employees
• Nursery employees
• Lifeguards
• Swimming teachers/coaches
• Management roles

The most detailed checks are reserved for those who will be taking part in regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults, such as the roles listed above. Anyone who is responsible for the care of others as part of their day-to-day role must have an Enhanced DBS Check.
