Advice for Employers Hiring Foreign Nationals
Running a DBS check on a person who currently lives abroad is not possible, as the Disclosure and Barring Service cannot access criminal records which are held overseas. You can, however, complete a background check through a different avenue.
A small number of records may be held on the Police National Computer which would flag up any crimes committed in the UK or abroad. Another method is to contact the embassy or High Commission of the country which they hail from. These should both be able to provide you with a background check and any translation services you may need to understand any documents provided.
For the most detailed criminal background checks contact the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI). The CPNI provides protective security advice for companies and organisations in the UK and 62 other countries around the world.
It is also recommended that you should obtain a certificate of good conduct and the regular references from past employers. This will add an extra layer of security to your checks.
