Everything You Need-to-Know About Referencing

We’ve all written a CV before when applying for a job, but it’s not until you become the hirer that you may realise the importance of correct (and complete) referencing. And the same goes for a buy-to-let investor looking to vet out a potential tenant.

So what exactly is referencing and why is it so important? Let’s find out.

What is Referencing and When is it Required?

Referencing is the basic evidencing that the claims you have made are true. So for example, when applying for a job you have to verify your career history and qualifications, or when attempting to lease a house prove you can afford the payments.

Any reference should be true, accurate and not misleading in anyway. If not correct, this can lead to legal action or dismissal further down the road.

Referencing Services with CBS

Here at CBS we offer an in-depth range of job screening and referencing packages. And our unique solution means that we can custom build a screening system for your needs that is easily accessible online. These can look at any of the following:

Credit and financial reports – is the person as financially sound as they claim to be? Can they afford to make the required payments?

ID checks – are they who they say they are?

Right to work – does the applicant have the right to work in the UK?

Education confirmation – did the person attend the education establishments listed?

Employment history – where has the individual worked in the past? And what was their job title?

Qualification confirmation – does the applicant hold the qualifications they claim to have?

Company reports and directorships – are they a director of a company and if so, how well is the company performing?

Professional qualifications – do they hold any extra qualifications and to what level?

Criminal record checks – does the person have any spent or unspent convictions, warnings, or cautions?

Character referencing – what is the person like? And would they fit with your organisation/be a quality tenant?

Security clearance – is an applicant suitable for such clearance?

Media checks – what is the individual’s public image like? What appears when you Google their name?

Gap analysis – what did they do during that gap on their CV? Did they travel, were they in jail etc?

Money laundering reports – do they have any history of this?

International reports – this applies to foreign applicants or anyone who has lived abroad for a set period of time.

But why would you hire us when you can do most of these checks yourself? Well, we’re experts in background screening and submit thousands of checks every year. That means we can complete your processes quicker and more efficiently, for a fraction of the cost. This will free up your, or your staff’s time to concentrate on doing your main job.

We take the stress out of admin work for you as 88% of employment screening is returned completed within 10 working days! So get in contact today to talk through your referencing queries with one of our trained advisors.
